The book ‘ Raquel says (Something Entirely Unexpected)’ is a fictional work by the author Mois Benarroch. He is a prolific Israeli poet and writer whose works have been translated to English. This original work has been translated by Sally Seward. It is a short work of fiction of a hundred pages .The cover page is interestingly depicted by a picture of a man and woman with a secretive and mysterious look in their eyes. It gives a desire to read the book. The book consists of a hundred pages but it takes time to read and follow.

The writer is the main character of the book and the book is a first person account of life and events of life. There is a unique writing style as there is always a reference to the past events which connect to the present. The events are set in real backdrop of real, existing places which make us travel back and forth in time. This sometimes is a little difficult to grasp but the places are vivid and make a connect with the characters.

The story revolves around two main characters, Mois and Raquel, a man and a woman, living parallel and different lives but spiritually connected through their writing. They are like soul mates that have a strong bond which surpasses all other worldly connections. As we delve deeper into the story, the story unfolds the truth and the mystery surrounding the characters. Will they break the barriers of life and reality to meet?

The author takes us on a journey of life, where writing has no limits, and pages of the book are like events of life. The author sets the story against important cultural and political events and how it affects the life of the two main characters. The story is about the deep, emotional conversations between them and their meetings. He meets Raquel when they are both forty but he feels that the connection is since they were born, through childhood adolescence and forever.

I rate the book 3 out of 4 stars because it is a well written fictional prose but difficult to comprehend as it takes us beyond the reality of life. What is interesting is the author tries to explain the reality of every person’s life who dreams of a parallel life but may not have the opportunity or the courage to traverse this new path. The questions which come in mind is the difficulty when the reality meets the dreams of a parallel life perceived ? And then what? Life can change but we need to know how the changes will affect our life.
